To support this, the Athletic Skills Model (ASM) introduces the Fundamental 10!. This science-based and practically applicable model consists of ten basic movement skills that are essential for optimal motor development. They are relevant in sports, lifestyle, physical education, and healthcare.

How does the Fundamental 10! work?

At ASM, it is recommended to use the Fundamental 10! to focus on all 10 basic movement skills in sports, games, activities, professional profiles, or exercise routines.

Through the Fundamental 10!, diverse exercise programmes such as gym classes, training, and vitality programmes can incorporate structure in their planning. When focusing on a single sport or activity, an analysis can be made based on the 10 basic movement skills. Some of these forms are present in a sport, others are not. Often, the forms included are developed in a one-sided manner, and the absent forms receive no attention. Greater variety in movement forms leads to increased diversity and more versatile movement.

Movement education for everyone.

Involving many basic movement skills in your movement repertoire used to come naturally. During outdoor play, sports class, PE and music and dance class. However, today’s generation of youth is less fit and we need to offer them additional exercise programmes to compensate the “forgotten exercise skills.

In addition, today’s adults and seniors move too little. Our sitting habits work overtime, and when we do move, it is often one-sided. It does’nt seem logical to learn to move better by providing a balancetraining only at later age. It makes more sense to influence people throughout their entire lives by thoughtful diverse exercises. The Fundamental 10! serves as a menu of choices for the trainer, coach, teacher, therapist, parent, counselor. It provides a structure in programming a diverse range of exercise offerings.

Athletic Skills Model

The Fundamental 10! is a concept derived from the Athletic Skills Model® and was developed by, and is the registered property of, the Athletic Skills Company. The ASM is a Dutch talent development model that is scientifically and practically substantiated. It was developed by René Wormhoudt, the strength and conditioning coach of the Dutch national football team (KNVB), and Prof. Dr. Geert Savelsbergh, Professor in the Department of Human Movement Sciences at the VU University Amsterdam and Professor of Talent Development at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.
