PLAYCE Pompey is located in Portsmouth and is the UK’s first versatile and colourful multi-skills activity space. The project is a collaboration between University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth City Council Portsmouth City Council (PCC) and the ASM. It has been funded by the University of Portsmouth and supported by external organizations, including Portsmouth City Council, NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), South Western Railway Customer and Communities Improvement Fund (CCIF).
Martina Navarro from the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science at the University of Portsmouth, wanted to bring the ASM to the city after seeing its success abroad. “The ASM is a different way of thinking about movement, sports, physical education and healthcare. As an example, if PE teachers and coaches encouraged us to practice a range of basic skills, such as jumping and balancing embedded in a wide variety of sports, people are more likely to become better sportsmen and women.”
Prof. dr. Geert Savelsbergh, co-founder of the ASM, says: “The PLAYCE Pompey offers limitless ways of challenging children to play and adults to be active and exercise. It helps to develop a healthy life style and brings people of different ages and social backgrounds together. It may even reduce loneliness and depression.”
